NASPANVAC

NASPANVAC

This is an international consortium of eight members which has received EU funding totalling €3.57 million, over three years. The Nasal Pandemic Influenza Vaccine (NASPANVAC) project is funded by the European Union under the FP7 scheme.

The overall aim of the project is to develop an effective, user-friendly, stable and intranasally delivered vaccine against highly pathogenic strain of the influenza virus (H5N1) using a proprietary nasal delivery platform, ChiSys® (Archimedes Development Ltd) and to have demonstrated proof of principle in a clinical trial during the programme.

The scientific objectives of the project are to:

  • Induce both systemic and mucosal immunity
  • Evaluate efficacy and toxicity in preclinical studies
  • Evaluate efficacy and safety profile in humans
  • Provide a substantial level of cross-immunity against drifted strains of H5
  • Determine effectiveness at low dose to meet the global demands from limited vaccine stockpiles
  • Demonstrate thermal stability so as to avoid refrigeration for storage and transportation
  • Produce a user friendly vaccine applicator
