NIBSC has an international reputation for scientific excellence built on over 50 years experience in the field of biological standardisation. We work with other organisations to carry out grant funded research projects relating to assay development, product formulation and physicochemical characterisation of biopharmaceuticals.

NIBSC maintains a vigorous research programme and works closely with many research partners from the biological medicines community.  Its research helps inform its public health functions and ensures that its scientists are at the forefront of their field, enabling them to offer the best possible advice.  The Institute’s areas of research interest include research into the HIV virus and vaccine development, biosimilars characterisation and standardisation, influenza vaccine standardisation (both seasonal and pandemic), formulation and freeze-drying of biologicals, meningitis vaccine development and standardisation, monoclonal antibody-based medicine and characterisation, nucleic acid technology diagnostic assay development, polio vaccine development to aid eradication of polio, vaccines for developing world diseases and banking, characterisation, cryopreservation and safety testing of stem cell lines.
