NIBSC maintains a vigorous research programme and works closely
with many research partners from the biological medicines
community. Its research helps inform its public health
functions and ensures that its scientists are at the forefront of
their field, enabling them to offer the best possible advice.
The Institute’s areas of research interest include research into
the HIV virus and vaccine development, biosimilars characterisation
and standardisation, influenza vaccine standardisation (both
seasonal and pandemic), formulation and freeze-drying of
biologicals, meningitis vaccine development and standardisation,
monoclonal antibody-based medicine and characterisation, nucleic
acid technology diagnostic assay development, polio vaccine
development to aid eradication of polio, vaccines for developing
world diseases and banking, characterisation, cryopreservation and
safety testing of stem cell lines.
