One of NIBSC’s key objectives is promote science-led policy
making in the field of biological medicines and the Institute's
scientists make a major contribution to a wide range of
policy-making and regulatory bodies. NIBSC scientists are
widely consulted on issues of biological safety and efficacy and
the Institute has a particularly close relationship with the World
Health Organisation (WHO) and is the leading WHO laboratory for
biological standardisation. Many of the scientists are also
members of key regulatory committees both nationally and
internationally.
The Institute also offers independent advice to manufacturers
and the institute operates a transparent and auditable framework to
assess potential conflicts of interest.
The Institute also arranges international workshops, discussion
fora and scientific meetings focused on important, current issues
in biological medicines. Past topics have included clinical
virology standards, influenza vaccine development and analytical
methods for product development. The Institute also offers
training course such as the popular ‘Principles of Biological
Standardisation’.
Details of upcoming training and other events can be found on
