At NIBSC, in close association with the UKSCB, scientists are
using an interdisciplinary approach to research in this area with
groups currently working on the differentiation of stem cells for
cell replacement therapy for diabetes, neuronal diseases and
cardiac disease, the emerging role of stem cells in gene therapy,
and the cellular reprogramming of somatic cell types to generate
induced pluripotent stem cells.
In addition to this basic science research,
the UKSCB is a leader in cell banking and characterisation. In this
capacity, scientists within the UKSCB undertake research into
optimising culture conditions, culture media, characterisation
assays/technologies/platforms and also input into the regulatory
aspects of regenerative medicine and stem cell research.
