Active involvement in the European and International initiatives to improve standardisation and assays for potency testing as alternatives to LD50 are under active development.  NIBSC has adopted a multidisciplinary approach to utilising animal tissue, neuronal cells and biochemical assays based on intracellular substrates with an aim of developing a feasible alternative potency assay to the mouse LD50 test.
